Overview of the Scoring Guide for Student Products

Definition of Student Product

This customizable Scoring Guide was created to evaluate the effective use of technology in products created by students. It can be used by external evaluators and internal evaluators. It can also be used by teachers and students to assess the ability of students to communicate content and to express themselves through the use of technology.

The Scoring Guide is designed for use with Grades 4-12. It is divided into 14 types of products. These products represent types of communication that are based on national benchmarks of writing and design principles and that were field-tested with classroom teachers across the nation.

Versions of the Scoring Guide

There are two versions of the Scoring Guide: Analytical Scoring Guide (using detailed descriptions of criteria) and Holistic Scoring Guide (using general descriptions of criteria.) Users may choose either version when creating a Scoring Guide. Generally, the Analytical Scoring Guide is used with new users who are unfamiliar with the criteria. Holistic Scoring Guides are shorter and more useful once criteria have been learned.

Parts of the Scoring Guide

The Scoring Guide has nine categories divided into two parts:

  • Part I: Communication of Content.
    • Preparation Process
    • Content Knowledge
    • Format and Structure.
  • Part II: Craftsmanship of Expression.
    • Text
    • Voice and Sound
    • Image
    • Design
    • Presentation
    • Interactivity.

Nine Categories of Assessment

There are a total of nine possible categories used to assess student products. However, since the Scoring Guide is customized based on the type of product being evaluated, not all categories will appear in all guides.

After choosing one of the 14 types of student products, users will be given the Part I (content) and Part II (craftsmanship) checklists. Part I is generated automatically and is not interactive. It includes:

Part I: Communication of Content
check box Preparation Process
check box Content Knowledge
check box Format and Organization

Part II is customizable as users are given a checklist of the following categories. Users click the appropriate categories for the student product being evaluated. For example, a product using desktop publishing would be evaluated on Text, Image, and Design but not on Voice and Sound. Part II includes:

Part II: Craftsmanship of Expression
check box Text Communication
check box Image Communication
check box Voice and Sound Communication
check box Design of Communication
check box Presentation of Communication
check box Interactivity of Communication

    2 Not Quite Developed
    1 Limited
    0 Absent
Criteria

The score should be based on numerous criteria that are generated for each category.
