National Contest Students-at-Work

The First Annual Media Perspectives on Student Understanding:
A National Talent Search Contest for Students-at-Work

This contest ended March 15, 2004.

A search for talented students who can effectively communicate deep understanding of any content topic using computers. Awards for students are in three grade ranges. There are also awards for teachers. WIN great prizes!

The National Contest for Students-at-Work uses recently developed Student Scoring Guides and supports multiple ISTE NET Standards. Watch for special 2003 NECC and NSBA sessions!

Registrations are no longer being taken.

Purpose

  • Reward and honor exemplary work by students and teachers.
  • Identify exemplars of student work which illustrate student's ability to create and communicate their deep understanding of content and their computer craftsmanship.
  • Identify exemplars of teacher lesson plans that illustrate environments where students can express their deep understanding of content and their computer craftsmanship.
  • Create awareness of online assessment tools that focus attention on the understanding of ideas and concepts as well as effective use of computer-based technologies.
  • Encourage teachers to create environments that nourish the joy of learning.

Contest Organization
Forty-two student project winners are possible (3 grade ranges, 14 types of products in each grade range).

There will also be awards to honor exemplary lesson designs created by teachers. Fourteen teacher winners are possible—one for each of the fourteen types of student projects.

Grade ranges:

  • Grades 3-5
  • Grades 6-9
  • Grades 10-12

Fourteen types of communication/student products (descriptions of the 14 types of student products):

  • Personal expression
  • Myths/folk tale
  • Short story
  • Summary report
  • Book report
  • How-to directions
  • Biographies
  • Advertisement
  • Describe/conclude
  • Analyze/conclude
  • Analyze/persuade
  • Compare/contrast
  • Cause/effect
  • Participatory environment

Grand Prizes
A "celebrity scoring team" will select a single Grand Prize from each of the three student grade ranges and the teacher lesson category, resulting in Grand Prizes for three students and one teacher.

Note:

  • There is no entry fee.
  • Registration is required.
  • One student product entry per teacher.
  • One entry per team of students or teachers.
