Content
Science:
- Learn about the general components of an ecosystem as well as specific components and issues related to local wetland ecosystems
Math:
- Gather and organize data (research skills) using multiple resources, including electronic graphic resources
Social Studies:
- Understand the climate and land formations that affect this ecosystem
- Acquire map reading skills
Critical Thinking:
- Recognize wetland issues and generate open-ended questions to investigate those issues
- Analyze data gathered and propose a possible solution to the issue
Strategies for Presenting the Unit:
Introduce the unit with a scenario, such as the following: Since 1818, 90 percent of the wetland regions in Illinois have disappeared. How might this continued loss affect life in our county? Have students direct their own investigation of a problem related to their local wetlands.
Roles:
- The teacher will assume the role of facilitator/co-learner as each student team investigates one aspect of the wetland issues in the area.
- Students will work collaboratively during student-directed investigation and produce a multimedia product to share their data with an audience.
