As of September 30, 2005, the North Central Regional Technology in Education Consortium is no longer in operation.
Allow students to pick their groups. This strategy teaches the value of "careful" selection, not necessarily based on friendships, by the end of the unit.
As you assign the weeds to each group, record which student is responsible for which task.
Preparation time can take from 15 to 25 minutes in the classroom. Students should go to the media center and begin their research on Day One. The next two days will be spent in the media center; students will be in the classroom the last two days of the unit.
To reduce the time needed for the unit, have each group concentrate on only one weed. To lengthen the unit, have each member in the group be responsible for a weed. A multimedia presentation, such as PowerPoint, by each group would also require more time and student effort, but might be worth considering.
The value of having materials in advance of this project cannot be understated.
Depending on the time of year you begin this unit, a field trip prior to spring planting would be an excellent follow-up. Have students bring their handouts so they can identify weeds.
