Goals
We are primarily an agriculture-based community, with many of our students working on the family farm. Because textbooks often lack pictures of weeds that affect crop farming, outside resources must be found. By using technology to search for these resources, we are developing two goals:
". . .social and economic forces strongly influence which technologies will be used." National Standards (from American Association for the Advancement of Science. (1993). Benchmarks for Science Literacy. New York: Oxford University Press.) p. 57 "Issues in Technology" Grade 9-12
". . . in agriculture, as in all technologies, there are always trade-offs to be made." ibid. p. 186 "Agriculture" Grade 9-12.
We achieve a third goal by having students look at more than one method of weed eradication from crop fields. At a time when the most common practice of weed eradication is based on pesticides, and this usage is being questioned as environmentally and physically safe, we need to explore other ways of weed elimination without destroying the economic basis of the agricultural industry.
