As of September 30, 2005, the North Central Regional Technology in Education Consortium is no longer in operation.
Students will work in small groups according to topic while conducting research, organizing information, and presenting the information to the class. Groups are more effective when the students are interested in the topic and when the groups are small. Four to six students per group is often effective for this type of activity. An effective technique is to ask students to write down one or two communication devices they find most interesting before they know that their answers will determine the group assignments. You can use their papers to identify potential conflicts within the groups. Now is the time to make adjustments, if necessary.
If your classroom has only one computer, make sure you have print materials available. The media specialist is a great help here. Don't forget the town library, either.
Whole class discussion also will be needed. This investigation would be an excellent activity to team teach with the social studies and language arts teachers.
Your media specialist is also an excellent resource. He or she can help you find materials on the Internet, access inter-library loan systems, and so forth. You may want to see your media specialist prior to the investigation to allow him or her time to find more materials for your students.
It is best to work in the media center for group work, because it allows the students to be more actively involved in the research process. Some groups should work on the computers while others are doing text research. You may even need to schedule time slots on the computers to allow all groups to have a chance to search.
The requirements may need to be modified for special needs children, or an adult helper may need to be provided to help them find the information.
