Prior Learning, Interests, Misconceptions, and Conceptual Difficulties

Students should have some research skills prior to the beginning of the investigation. Additionally, they may experience difficulty referencing the chronological sequence of events and recognizing the cause and effect of specific technological advances in communication. Both of these obstacles can be addressed during the investigation. Experience using the Internet may be beneficial to the student's search. A chronological timeline of events will be created. As each invention is "discovered" by the students, that event can be placed on the timeline. The cause and effect of technological advancement of communication devices is a more difficult concept to understand. Discussion will have to guide the students to a better understanding of the need for the inventions and the effects the inventions.

Students would also benefit from an American history background dating from the 1860s to the present, particularly westward expansion. This investigation might provide an opportunity to involve the social studies teacher.
