Extensions and Adaptation

This material could be adapted to higher grade levels by having students find their own pictures and put them in multimedia displays to share with others. Upper grade students also could help develop the pictures to be used by the first grade.

This activity can be extended by adding a component in which the students identify the various substances used to create the objects in a picture.

Another component could require students to find matter that has been changed from one state to another by heating and cooling. An example might be a picture of an apple to represent solid and apple juice to represent liquid or a picture of concrete being poured for liquid and a picture of a concrete building, etc.

This activity could challenge upper-level students to find substances such as water that can be changed into all three states by heating and cooling.

Students might enjoy making state-of-matter webs.

Upper-level students could be encouraged to discover that materials such as water can be changed from one state to another by heating and cooling. At this level, students should only know that matter can be changed but not expected to understand the molecular structures.
