This activity, with the help of visual materials, is intended to enhance and supplement the teaching of a unit on the properties of matter.
Prior hands-on work with the three properties of matter is recommended.
Students in first grade sometimes have a hard time recognizing the forms of
matter in the world beyond the classroom. They especially are confused by the
term we use for gasoline: "gas." They hear this term so much in their daily
lives that they may have created a mental picture of gas as being liquid. They
will need repeated exposure to as many images of gas as can be presented, as
well as hands-on experience, to help them to reconstruct their information.
