The viewing guides are enhanced when students work together in small groups to discuss the words or statements in an attempt to resolve differences they have with their choices. The key is to make sure the students cite supporting evidence for their choices. They can use the instructional source for evidence or they may back up their choice with experiences they have encountered in real life. In this group setting, the students are applying the desired literacy skills needed to develop a feeling for gathering information from such media. This interaction among the students in discussing the reasons for their choices is the key to such learning. Giving the viewing guides to students without the opportunity to discuss their evidence turns the viewing guide into a simple worksheet. Using the viewing guide as a worksheet to "test" students' understanding of the concepts presented will do little to promote their graphic literacy.
Teachers may ask why these viewing guides use statements and words rather than questions to help students in their understanding of the graphic material. Giving students the statements and words provides students the freedom to react to the information in many different ways. The students are not asking themselves "What is the answer the teacher is after?" Rather, the students have the opportunity to go in many different directions in their justification for the choices they make. Some of the evidence that the students give may not be what the teacher was "looking for," putting the teacher in the role of a learner, listening to new ideas coming from the students' responses to the statements.
