Assessment

A good way to assess student understanding of nonprint material is to observe students' interaction as they discuss their viewing guides in small groups. Students who are able to cite valid reasons for agreeing (or disagreeing) with the statements found in the viewing guides are showing a high level of success. Students who only place checks on the numbered line and are not prepared to give reason for their choices may not attain the goals of the lesson. It is important to point out that the viewing guides should not be used to quiz students. The guides are a vehicle to help students understand the content.

Another way to assess student understanding is to have them create their own statements from the graphic medium they are viewing. Developing such statements shows a high level of independence in graphic literacy.
