Community resources/guest speakers:
Most local and state governments are using GIS (at least partially) to deal with their spatial data. County roads coverages for most of the U.S. also are available and can provide interesting data sets for local schools.

One of the best sites that provides an introduction to GIS. ESRI is the maker
of Arc/Info, which is probably the most-used GIS software.

A public domain GIS that you can download, plus two different demonstrations.

An excellent detailed demonstration of what GIS can do. The online tutorial
does not require any software (The logic is involved so have some time on
your hands when you go through it.)

Excellent background information if what a GIS is and how it is used.
