Students should have a basic understanding of how to read a map (orientation) and understand how symbols can represent objects on the landscape. Students also need to have some elementary knowledge about sets (what they are) and the intersections of these sets.
It is also important that students be able to work collaboratively in groups
of two or three and to understand the value of working together to solve a problem.
