As of September 30, 2005, the North Central Regional Technology in Education Consortium is no longer in operation.
In this lesson, students role-play as parents who will pass identified traits to a child. The students follow several of their own traits, as well as some hidden lethal traits, through the process of meiosis and fertilization to the production of an imaginary child. They will then describe their child's physical appearance (phenotype) and, acting as parents, compose questions about any lethal disorders their child may have inherited to ask a "genetic counselor."
I would like to point out that this is a modification of an activity I received from the Genetics Workshop at Ball State University. As with many activities, teachers modify them to fit their students needs and their teaching situation. I would like to thank them for all of the many activities and ideas they have made available to me and my students.
