If students have not done activities in detailed observation, it might be helpful to do a couple of activities in observation. You could have a computer with Internet access and a projection device and load The Amazing Picture Machine Web site. You could then bring up pictures and have students list interesting details in the pictures. You also could make use of a CD with pictures (for example, With Open Eyes from the Art Institute of Chicago or some sort of clip art CD) and have students locate details in pictures from these CDs. If you do not have access to a computer with a projection device, you could bring pictures into your classroom and have students examine the pictures for interesting details. You might ask your students the following questions:
The lesson parts of Activities 1 and 2 will need to be conducted in a computer lab. The teacher moves around the lab, facilitating, offering ideas, and answering questions. The assessments can be done in the regular classroom. Students can work individually, in pairs, or in small groups. To facilitate students with special needs, the teacher may want to communicate with resource teachers prior to the lessons and invite those teachers into the lab or classroom during these activities.
The lesson parts of Activities 3 and 4 can be conducted in a computer lab or in the regular classroom. In a classroom with one computer, some sort of computer projection device will be needed. To facilitate students with special needs, the teacher may want to communicate with resource teachers prior to the lessons and invite those teachers into the lab or classroom during these activities.
