Prior Learning, Interests, Misconceptions, and Conceptual Difficulties
Important prior learning:
- Students should have an idea how to use the scientific process to solve problems. (Identify a problem, look for information regarding the topic, formulate a hypothesis, develop an experiment or plan for collecting data, and draw a conclusion.)
- Students should have some knowledge of how to do an Internet search.
- Students should have some graphing and charting skills.
- Students with access to a spreadsheet may need to have some basic understanding of its characteristics (optional).
- Students should have some knowledge of how to produce a multimedia presentation (optional).
Conceptual difficulties:
Major characteristics of biomes are difficult to teach motivationally since there are a limited number of hands-on types of projects to investigate. Technology can be used to increase student interest and provide a rich variety of research materials.
