Steroid Medication Side Effects

Steroids are usually used for medication purposes to cure a wide range of diseases. However, a prolonged use of steroids for medical purposes, usually between two to three months, comes with varying side effects depending with the dosage, usage, user’s biological factors, or other complications. Some of the steroid medication side effects are immediate while some takes a long time before manifestation. The side effects may be mild, severe, short lived or long term. Once you note one of the following side effects, quickly consult your doctor for further investigation.

Mostly, steroids cause muscular enhancement, however, it is not surprising for steroids to cause osteoporosis commonly known as thinning of bones. Osteoporosis may cause weakening of the body and severe bones breakage under a relatively low pressure. However, taking other medication is a known protection against bone weakening. Steroids also suppress the immune system, which increase the chances of contracting infections.

Prolonged use of steroids for any purpose causes a hormonal imbalance in the body. A variation of the normal body hormones alters the normal body operations. One of the most affected function is the balance of the body’s blood sugar. Steroids increases the development of diabetes as the pancreas and other body organs becomes unable to regulate the sugar levels. The risk is even higher when a history of diabetes runs through the family.

The enhanced muscular performance associated with steroids affects the smooth flow of blood. With an enhanced performance, the heart has to pump more blood to the muscles through the blood vessel. Coupled with the imbalance in blood sugar levels, the high blood pressure becomes severe if not well checked.

Some steroids cause a high accumulation of cholesterol and lipids in the body that cause a reduction in the blood vessels’ blood carrying capacity. The combination of the low capacity with the increased flow of blood increase the pressure of blood within the vessels to an extent of damaging the blood vessels and other vital organs. In particular, the heart may experience several problems such as heart diseases and an eventual heart failure when the heart muscles experience fatigue. Additionally, steroid increases the chance of Stroke and arterial disease.

Higher steroid dosage over a long time alters the moods and causes behavioral changes. Although a large number of people have a better feeling of themselves when under the influence of steroids, there is the risk of mental health issues. At times, Steroids intensifies depressions and aggravates the mental health problems. Over a long period, some people may start exhibiting confusion and become highly irritable. More advanced behavioral steroid medication side effects are constant delusional and suicidal thoughts especially at the withdrawal of the steroid medication.

Skin problems are a major side effect associated with the use of steroids. The skin may become easily prone to injuries due to the skin thinning effects. A steroid user may experience a poor skin healing process after injuries. Injection of steroids may cause injection site to experience redness, swell, experience pain or become annoyingly itchy.

Other side effect is infertility caused by a low or no sperm count in males, who may also get the dreaded testicular atrophy. Females may start experiencing irregular menstrual cycles. There may be growth and development of opposite gender features in both males and females.
