Learning With Technology Course ResourcesThe following resources from the Learning
with Technology course are available as downloadable PDF files.
To view and print these PDF files you will need Acrobat
reader software which is available free from Adobe.
These resources are integral parts of the LWT course. They prove to
be most useful when incorporated strategically in the design of professional
development programs that focus on student learning. These materials
may be reproduced without alteration for non-commercial, educational purposes.
For more information about the use of these materials or the Learning
With Technology course, please call 1-800-356-2735. Descriptions of each document and the option to download it below.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Different Technologies
Tool The purpose of this resource (divided into two charts) is to help you
choose appropriate technologies. It identifies some key advantages and
disadvantages of specific technologies. You might add your own ideas as
you try new technologies or even as you use familiar technology and materials. PDF version of the document. (Macintosh and
Windows, an Adobe Acrobat file, 45K) Constructive Friends Feedback Form This form consists of five questions that can be answered by colleagues.
It is intended to guide conversations about lessons and units, to help
teachers articulate their actions, and to reflect on teaching and learning. PDF version of the document. (Macintosh and Windows,
an Adobe Acrobat file, 30K) Engaged and Worthwhile Learning Activity This activity is intended to activate educators' prior knowledge about
and experiences engaged learning. They recall, describe, and discuss with
each other especially meaningful learning experiences (in or out of school).
The discussion is led based on the indicators of engaged learning as described
in the Engaged Learning essay. PDF version of the document. (Macintosh and
Windows, an Adobe Acrobat file, 20K) Engaged and Worthwhile Learning Essay This essay provides a description of engaged and worthwhile learning.
It explains the characteristics of engaged learning in terms of Learning
Actions, Student Roles, Teacher Roles, and Learning Tasks and Activities. PDF version of the document. (Macintosh and Windows,
an Adobe Acrobat file, 165K) Examples of Technology Use Tool This tool provides examples of both familiar and new or extended technologies
for learning actions. The document also contains engaged learning questions
for each action. Thus, this tool overlaps somewhat the Learning Actions
- Engaged Learning chart, although it is organized differently. Note:
Our examples are not an exhaustive list of the ways to use either familiar
or new and extended technology. PDF version of the document. (Macintosh and
Windows, an Adobe Acrobat file, 45K) The group process techniques are suggestions for supporting the facilitation
of professional development activities. These tips and tools support the
model of professional development devised by NCREL, which is based on
the philosophy of shared learning, not on an expert-driven model of delivery.
The group process techniques help participants set a purpose for their
professional development activity, generate ideas for action, generate
questions regarding a topic, respond to a colleague's questions, articulate
ideas based on reflection, set priorities and reach agreement, and evaluate
one's learning. PDF version of the document. (Macintosh and Windows,
an Adobe Acrobat file, 30K) This is a two- page checklist that helps teachers select and purchase
software for their students. It consists of a comprehensive list of considerations
that will aid teachers in assessing appropriate educational software. PDF version of the document. (Macintosh and Windows,
an Adobe Acrobat file, 15K) Reflection is an essential component of any professional development
model. It is one of the dimensions described in NCREL's model, giving
teachers the opportunity to analyze their instructional practices on the
basis of new knowledge. The journal template is one means of encouraging
reflection on the part of educators, as it offers prompts to facilitate
this process. PDF version of the document. (Macintosh and Windows,
an Adobe Acrobat file, 15K) Learning Actions - Engaged Learning Tool This tool shows relationships between four categories of learning actions
and indicators of engaged learning. The tool can be used in two ways.
First, it can help you plan lessons that promote engaged learning. Second,
it provides a way to evaluate existing lessons to determine how well they
promote engaged and worthwhile learning. PDF version of the document. (Macintosh and
Windows, an Adobe Acrobat file, 15K) NCREL Professional Development Model The design of the Learning With Technology course is based
on a model developed by the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory
(NCREL) that reflects research on adult learning and professional development.
Professional growth is seen in terms of five dimensions that are develomental
and cyclical: PDF version of the document. (Macintosh and Windows,
an Adobe Acrobat file, 90K) Print Scenario: Project-Based Science This scenario, based on actual classroom activities, demonstrates the
effective use of technology in the context of worthwhile and meaningful
learning. It shows ways that technology can enhance and extend a lesson
in a situation where students are engaged in authentic tasks and where
assessment informs further instruction. It is not a perfect example, as
it may not demonstrate every aspect of engaged learning and high performance
technology. But, it suggests how teachers can devise lessons and facilitate
instruction that capitalizes on using technology as a tool for learning. PDF version of the document. (Macintosh and
Windows, an Adobe Acrobat file, 30K) Engaged learning facilitators may wish to investigate some topics further.
This list of resources for this purpose is grouped into the following
topics: (a) coaching/mentoring, (b) change process, (c) curriculum design,
(d) facilitation, (e) professional development, and (f) technology. PDF version of the document. (Macintosh and Windows,
an Adobe Acrobat file, 15K) This is a three-page tool designed to guide teachers through the process
of planning a unit which incorporates engaged learning principles and
technology. The document serves as a template for recording unit components
such as: goals, content, students' interests and conceptual difficulties,
materials and resources, major learning activities, assessment, and management. PDF version of the document. (Macintosh and Windows,
an Adobe Acrobat file, 60K)
