5. Do some learners become overwhelmed with the broad scope of the project and need a lot of direction?

Some students do seem overwhelmed by the scope of the project and they do need a lot of direction. There are many people who need help in whittling down overwhelming circumstances to something that they can work on one piece at a time. And if that is a skill that we can develop in the classroom on a project like this, that will be a skill that they can use in their life. And, if you are familiar with the GED exam—it's an eight-hour exam, five different subjects—[it's a] very overwhelming thought to many people who have been away from school for a while and who don't like tests in the first place. There are some who need direction and instruction on whittling something down to do a piece at a time. For that very reason we do develop that competency—that self-management skill—that will make you more successful.
