Yes, they did. The books were part of our curriculum. The students actually had a choice between reading books that had to do with American history during the time of the movement from the East to the West. We also had novel sets that involved World War II, and my students happened to pick World War II as the theme they wanted to work under. So the books were targeted at the grade area I was teaching. I think where we dealt with the ability levels was that the students had the opportunity to read the book at their own pace. They had things like journaling and different activities they had to do while they were reading the book. They worked with partners that they chose. They tended to gravitate towards students that were similar in ability so they had small literature groups.
