2. Were there any remedial or low functioning students
in the class?
I had some gifted students in my classroom, so I did not have
any MMH students in my classroom, students that had 70 or below
IQ. I did have some learning disabled students, that had reading
disabilities, math disabilities. I also had EBD or emotional behavior
disturbed students in my classroom. And I had 35 students. The students
who were LD have a case worker who spends a specific amount of time
with them each week, and the agreement I made with that teacher
is while we were doing writing activities they would come into my
classroom and their assisting the student would happen during that
time but they would also circulate, so the student wouldn't feel
uncomfortable about being singled out, and work with other students.
So that is kind of how we dealt with the remedial or the low functioning.
I think one of the important things as a teacher is to identify
what the remedial thing is the student needs. If it is important
for you to record the book on a tape, then that is what you do.
If it is important to stay after school and spend an hour of tutorial
time with that student, then that is what I do. If it is important
to send a note home to the parent saying this is what you can do
to help your child get through this unit, then that is what I do.
So basically I don't water down the curriculum for those students.
I help them learn what they need to do to compete with the other
students.
