Yes and no. My students never have the opportunity to give another
student a grade, but they are always required to go to another student
to share what they're writing and get feedback. And it is their
decision whether they are going to make any changes that might have
been suggested. I guess the scenario I always give my students is
that when I applied for my job there were 2,000 other people who
were applying for the 20 jobs that were available. So I went to
other teachers I worked with; I went to my principal; I went to
my father; I went to my husband; and they all read through my application
before I turned it in. And that is a practice they should get in
even in sixth grade. So in that way, there was peer assessment,
but it didn't affect their final grade.
