Several ways. I use a rubric, the students have check sheets they
go through where they are constantly assessing their writing, working
on improving it. I take those self-assessments and they become part
of my assessment where I assess their assessment. I am not really
assessing their knowledge of World War II. I am assessing their
understanding of story structure, of characterization, of fact versus
opinion, and so it becomes much easier to do assessment because
it is things I have always assessed in the past; I'm just teaching
it a different way.
