1. How were these projects evaluated?

Several ways. I use a rubric, the students have check sheets they go through where they are constantly assessing their writing, working on improving it. I take those self-assessments and they become part of my assessment where I assess their assessment. I am not really assessing their knowledge of World War II. I am assessing their understanding of story structure, of characterization, of fact versus opinion, and so it becomes much easier to do assessment because it is things I have always assessed in the past; I'm just teaching it a different way.
