6. How did you present the unit?

Well, it started off with me explaining to my students that the next genre that we were going to be working on was historical fiction and that the school had two basic sets of novels: one had to do with American history and the movement from the East to the West, and the other had to do with World War II. We had a discussion, and the students pretty much overwhelmingly chose World War II, and that is how the unit began. From that point on I worked as a coach, I taught several little mini units, and the students basically generated and went off in whatever direction of World War II they wanted to go into.
