5. What skills/knowledge must students possess in order to do this project?

I think the students have to have some fundamental ability to read. There are some critical thinking and reading skills that are needed, but the unit was so individualized that students could come in at just about any ability level and receive the assistance they needed to go as far as they wanted to go. Some students took it a lot farther and became very involved in current events and reading the newspaper and making high level connections, where other students spent more time just learning about characterization and reading the books and not reading high-level, nonfiction books to supplement it. So I guess it doesn't really matter what skill area they are coming in at.
