1. What were the goals and outcomes of this project (besides an understanding of the causes of World War II and historical fiction)?

The goals and the outcomes of the project weren't necessarily World War II. World War II was the theme and the major goals were that students learned about characterization, story structure, identifying fact versus opinion. They were able to practice their critical reading and thinking skills. In social studies they learned about latitude, longitude, the history of European geography, letter writing, and many other communications and social studies skills. They learned those skills and practiced those skills under the theme World War II, so the major goal wasn't that they learned a lot about World War II; it was the curriculum areas that we teach in the sixth grade.
