2. Can you explain how the money worked into the project?
What we did was we gave the kids $400 to start with. That was
their starting amount of money to get them from their original city.
Well, first they had to stay; the city that they started with they
had to stay there that night, and the $400 was to spend while they
were there. We did not envision them being in a city more than two
days. The money was for their hotel room, for their food, and for
any tourist attractions that they might want to see, and for gas
to the next city. Then the students were able to earn more money
by the completion of different portions of the project. They had
to keep a daily journal, so that was worth money. How well they
did that journal earned them more money. They also had to keep a
spreadsheet, so that also earned them money. Each child had to do
a travel poster of that particular city they were in highlighting
interesting facts about that city and some of the tourist attractions
that they visit. As each child completed a different component or
as the group completed the group componentthe journal was
a group project, the spreadsheet was a group project, the travel
poster was an individual projectthey earned money. They could
earn up to $400 to get them from this city, so they could use that
$400 for the next city they were going to. They had the opportunity
to earn $400 as they went from city to city. Sometimes they got
a little bit more, because before they left their current city to
go to their next city, they got a fate card. Sometimes the fates
were kind and sometimes they were not.
